Artificial intelligence has been one of the most trending topics of 2023 and it has managed to dominate all discussions at COP28 in the UAE

Google Chief Sustainability Officer Kate Brandt explained that the hot topic at COP28 is the global stocktake, which refers to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Brandt emphasized how AI can accelerate global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, which need to be cut down by 43 percent by 2030.

Brandt highlighted Google's research initiative Project Greenlight, which has helped reduce emissions by using AI to improve traffic flow in various cities.

Google is looking to help the Middle East and North Africa in their sustainability efforts with initiatives including AI.

Other Tech Institutions Providing AI Initiatives at COP28

Another tech company that brought AI to the forefront at COP28 was Microsoft, which announced a partnership with the United Nations to spearhead the creation of an AI-powered platform and a global climate data hub.

The tech hub IBM also announced a partnership with NASA to utilize AI to create a new artificial weather model to understand climate change and predict weather events more efficiently.

Another AI initiative that was brought to the table at COP28 is a bilingual large language model dedicated to climate intelligence by Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence in Abu Dhabi.

This language model will answer users' queries related to climate change and sustainability.

The COP28 will run until Dec. 12, therefore there might be more AI initiatives brought to the table.
