All You Need to Know About the “XBB” COVID Subvariant

  • Publish date: Thursday، 22 December 2022

Over the past two weeks, a new variant of the Coronavirus was detected in a number of countries, including Singapore and Hong Kong, known as “XBB”, while experts suggested that the variant was discovered, for the first time, last August.

Cases of the new coronavirus are estimated to more than double in one day, in Singapore, where numbers rose from 4,700 to 11,700.

The new variant is the worst genetic version of the virus, as it avoids antibodies from monoclonal treatments, which makes the drugs ineffective at slowing its growth inside the body's cells.

The new variant contains at least 7 mutations, making it more difficult for immune systems to recognize the sub-variable, thus; increasing the potential for antibodies to evade cells and cause infection.

The authorities concerned with managing epidemics around the world stressed the need not to abandon caution.

It is noteworthy that the Coronavirus has killed more than 6.5 million patients, and infected more than 620 million people around the world, according to official statistics.
