Apple opened its first store in India on Tuesday, in a move that highlights the importance of the sprawling Asian market to the future of the iPhone inventor.
The first store named 'Apple BK' is located in the densely populated city of Mumbai, and the firm is scheduled to open another store in the capital, Delhi.
“India has such a beautiful culture and an incredible energy, and we’re excited to build on our long-standing history,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release published Monday.
Cook posted a photo of himself and staff at the new apple store on Monday.
Apple aims to increase iPhone sales and manufacturing in India in a move that is similar to its strategy when it first entered China, which is now one of the company's largest markets.
According to the iPhone maker, the Mumbai store is one of the most energy-efficient locations in the world, has a dedicated solar power system, and is never dependent on fossil fuels to power its operations.
