Bill Gates Foundation Donates $1.2 Billion to Eradicate Polio
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will allocate $1.2 billion to support efforts to eradicate all forms of polio worldwide, as governments set the goal of eradicating polio, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the last two countries where the virus continues to spread.
"The latest steps to eradicate the disease are by far the most powerful," said Mark Suzman, CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. "But our Foundation continues to be dedicated to a polio-free future, and we're optimistic we'll see that soon."
Polio is a highly contagious disease spread mainly through fecal contamination and has killed or paralyzed thousands of children every year. Although there is no known cure, three doses of the vaccine provide close to 100% immunity.
