Colombia's President Gustavo Petro recently banned coal exports to Israel by signing a decree to pressure Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza.

Petro explained his move in a post on X, saying, "Colombian coal is used to make bombs to kill Palestinian children."

Since the start of the war in Gaza in October last year, Petro has emphasized that Israel is committing genocide in the Strip and called for the world to put an end to Netanyahu's violations.

At the end of February, Petro announced the suspension of the arms purchase deal with Israel following the flour massacre in Gaza when 118 Palestinians were killed while waiting for an aid convoy in northern Gaza.

In May, the Colombian President announced that his country ended all diplomatic ties with Israel and that other countries should not be passive towards what's happening in Gaza.

Colombia is Israel's biggest coal supplier, having sold $450 million of the fuel in 2023 to the country, according to Bloomberg.
