Dior's creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri has commissioned Indian artist Rithika Merchant's artwork for the Dior Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2025 show, which took place on Monday, Jan. 27 during the Haute Couture Week in Paris, France.
Merchant's 'The Flowers We Grew' was commissioned for the latest Dior Haute couture collection, featuring colorful paintings of trees, animals, birds, and everything related to nature.
Merchant said about her artwork, "It's from my own heritage, from the side of my family that's from Kerala. Women hold a lot of power and respect there."
She explained one of her pieces, saying, "This particular piece is about a great-aunt of mine who used to have a milk cooperative...I really want it to be about Genesis and birthing out these empowered women who are going to take on the world."
"First, going to the past, then coming back to the future. It's all about connection to nature."
Her artwork features a lot of birds and Merchant explained how "birds have signified ultimate freedom because they can fly". Some of her works feature eyes and the artist explains how for her "the eyes are the window to the soul. It's almost an extension of the heart."
Merchant's artwork adorned the walls surrounding the ramp for the Dior Haute couture show in Paris, creating a colorful atmosphere, which connected guests to nature.
