Discover Al-Wakrah City in Qatar
Al Wakrah city was established in 1972 and has an ancient history of pearling and fishing. It is bordered by Doha to the north and Al Rayyan to the west. Al Wakra is the second-largest city in terms of area (2,577.6 km²) and has a population of 299,037 people, according to the Planning and Statistics Authority.
Al-Wakrah is a name derived from the Arabic word “Wakar”, which means “Bird’s Nest”. This name was given to the city in reference to the large spread of bird nests in it.
Transportation to Al Wakrah City
You can get to Al Wakrah by your own car or taxi. In addition to mass transit services such as Uber, Careem, etc., you can also take public transportation from Doha to Al Wakra via the Doha Metro Red Line south.
Qatar Rail is currently offering free Metrolink buses - M128 and M134 to Al Wakrah South area.
There are also Karwa buses that can take you from Doha to Al Wakrah including the following bus lines: 109 (to Mesaieed); 119 (passes through Al Wakra Health Center, Ezdan Mall); 129.
Best places to visit in Al Wakrah
1-Al Janoub stadium
Al Janoub Stadium was inaugurated in 2019, and it is one of the stadiums that will host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
The stadium is surrounded by a park that was inaugurated on Qatar Sports Day 2020.
There are also various activity areas, such as a horseback riding track, a jogging/walking track, a bike path, children's play areas, a recreational soccer field, and there are also plenty of car parks.
2- The old "Souq" of Al-Wakrah
Al Wakrah's most popular destination, although less crowded than the more popular Souq Waqif, is still worth a visit even just for a meal at one of the restaurants or cafés along the beach. You'll also find old sailboats on the sand along the shore.
The Souq is divided into different sections, you will find shops selling things like dates, honey, nuts, perfumes, vegetables, fruits, fish, spices, handicrafts, marine equipment, and more.
The old Souq in Al Wakrah is on the waterfront, and all the restaurants are lined up close to the beach, so you can hear the calm sound of the water and enjoy the sunset while having your meals.
3- Al Wakrah Public Park
Al Wakrah Park is located near Al Wakrah Souq. The Park will definitely brighten your day with Colorful flowers that greet you at the entrance, and you will find more of them inside, in addition to the seasonal flowers arranged beautifully by color, so that it becomes charming to the eyes.
The public garden also offers shaded seating areas and a children's play area.
4- Al Wakrah Family Beach
It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Qatar and the Gulf region.
Al Wakra Family Beach requires swimmers to adhere to appropriate swimwear. Pets are not allowed on the beach, smoking, fire, BBQ, camping, photography, unaccompanied children, swimming is not allowed after sunset.
