Former Egyptian President's Rolex Sold at Sotheby's Auction
Former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser's vintage Rolex wristwatch was recently sold at an auction by Sotheby's.
The late president's family provided the 18-karat yellow gold watch. It was expected to sell for the cost between $ 30,000 and $ 60,000, but it sold for $ 840,000 in late 2024.
The Rolex was a 'Day Date', which was introduced in the 1950s. It was the first timepiece to tell the time in 26 languages on the dial of the watch.
The watch has been worn by notable figures like American presidents including John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
The watch was nicknamed 'The President' and was advertised as, "When a man has the world in his hands, you expect to find a Rolex on his wrist”.
Nasser's watch features Arabic writing and numerology and was gifted to him by his friend, the future president of Egypt, Anwar El-Sadat.
On the backside of the watch's dials, this is engraved in Arabic: "Mr. Anwar El-Sadat 26-9-1963".
This Rolex was one of the few luxury products the late president had. The watch was passed down in his family and reached his grandson who is also named Gamal Abdel Nasser.
He said, "As his grandson, I am hoping to pass on his watch to someone who appreciates Gamal Abdel Nasser's legacy and his dedication to the pursuit of lasting freedom and peace in the region and beyond."
