Antoine Griezmann, a key figure in France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad, has officially retired from international football. The 33-year-old forward announced his decision on Monday, marking the end of a decade-long career with Les Bleus.
Griezmann shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “It is with a heart full of memories that I am closing this chapter of my life.” The Atlético Madrid star departs as France’s vice-captain, leaving behind an impressive legacy that includes 137 appearances, making him France’s third-most capped player behind Hugo Lloris (145) and Lilian Thuram (142).
During his tenure with the national team, Griezmann scored 44 goals, placing him fourth in France's all-time scoring list, trailing only Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry, and current captain Kylian Mbappé.
Griezmann’s international career reached its peak with a goal in the 2018 World Cup final, where France triumphed 4-2 over Croatia. He also shined at Euro 2016, where he finished as the tournament’s top scorer, though France fell short in the final. His last major tournament appearance was in the 2022 World Cup, where France narrowly lost to Argentina in the final.
His final appearance for France came earlier this month in a UEFA Nations League win against Belgium. With Griezmann’s departure, the French national team is experiencing a generational shift, following the recent international retirements of Hugo Lloris, Raphaël Varane, and Olivier Giroud.
France coach Didier Deschamps is expected to announce his next squad this Thursday ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Israel and Belgium in October.
