On Sunday, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) leaders came together to demand an end to Israeli war crimes in Gaza, the displacement of its population, and the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories. The leaders emphasized their strong support for Palestine’s sovereignty over all lands occupied since 1967, and called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This bold stance was part of the "Kuwait Declaration," issued at the 45th session of the GCC's Supreme Council. The declaration commended the growing role of Gulf countries in addressing regional and global challenges—be it political, security-related, or economic. It highlighted the importance of their contribution to resolving issues that threaten peace, security, and stability, while promoting international dialogue and cooperation.

Calls for Immediate Action

The declaration made it clear that the GCC leaders are calling for an immediate stop to the ongoing violence in Gaza. The statement condemned the killing of civilians, collective punishment, and the destruction of critical civilian infrastructure, including healthcare facilities, schools, and places of worship. These actions, the leaders noted, are clear violations of international law and humanitarian principles.

In addition, the GCC reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting peace efforts in the region. This includes the resolutions of the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit hosted by Saudi Arabia in November, which aimed to enhance global efforts to halt the war in Gaza and achieve a comprehensive, lasting peace. The Summit called for the implementation of the two-state solution based on the Arab Peace Initiative, further recognizing Palestine as an independent state.

Support for Ceasefire Efforts and Regional Stability

The leaders also applauded Qatar’s efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the exchange of detainees, showcasing the region’s dedication to diplomacy and humanitarian efforts. On another front, they condemned the continued Israeli aggression in Lebanon, urging that the conflict not spread further. The GCC leaders also welcomed the recently brokered ceasefire in Lebanon, which helped to calm the escalating tensions.

Commitment to Peaceful Solutions

In addition to their focus on Gaza and Lebanon, the GCC leaders expressed their support for ongoing peace efforts in Yemen, particularly the initiatives led by Saudi Arabia and Oman to revive the political process. The GCC countries reiterated their preference for dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing their commitment to peaceful solutions to regional and international disputes in line with international law and the UN Charter.

This call for unity and action reinforces the Gulf nations' commitment to regional peace and stability, highlighting their role as key players in addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the Middle East. As the situation in Gaza and the broader region continues to unfold, the GCC remains steadfast in advocating for an end to violence and a lasting peace solution based on justice and diplomacy.
