Studies have shown that people with heart failure, a case when the heart becomes too weak to pump blood effectively, who reduce their sodium intake live better, but not longer, as reducing salt intake improves patients' quality of life and symptoms, but does not save the situation.

The study included 806 patients with heart failure at 26 medical centers in Canada, the United States, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and New Zealand, where half of them were asked to reduce the amount of salt they intake while the other half did not reduce the usual consumed amount. The results show that there was no difference in the number of deaths or patients admitted to hospitals due to heart problems.

The results were published in The Lancet and participated in the 71st Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology.
