In a statement delivered on Accession Day, His Majesty reflected on the legacy of the Al Busaidi family, stating, “November 20 of each year will be a National Day for the Sultanate of Oman. This date commemorates the year 1744, when Imam Sayyid Ahmed bin Said Al Busaidi unified Oman, securing its sovereignty and dignity.”
Previously celebrated on November 18 to honor the birthday of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the National Day has long held deep historical and cultural value. It symbolizes Oman’s liberation from Portuguese colonization in 1650, cementing its status as the Arab world's oldest independent state.
The move to November 20 is seen as a tribute to Oman’s enduring legacy of unity and resilience, rooted in the leadership of the Al Busaidi family.
Oman National Day is a time of pride and festivity for Omanis, featuring cultural showcases, military parades, and expressions of loyalty to the nation. The day highlights the country’s journey from its rich history to its modern prosperity, instilling immense pride among its people.
This shift in date underscores His Majesty’s commitment to celebrating Oman’s historic milestones while looking forward to the future with unity and gratitude.
