In a decisive move to protect Oman’s wildlife, the Court of Appeal in Salalah has handed down a one-year prison sentence and a fine of OMR 1,000 each to two individuals from a neighboring country.
The duo was convicted of participating with others in the smuggling of several wild animals, including species listed under Appendix (1) of Oman’s Natural Reserves and Wildlife Conservation Law No. (6/2003).
The court's ruling also mandates the confiscation of the smuggled animals and other seized items. This significant verdict underscores Oman’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and sending a strong message against wildlife trafficking.
The Environment Authority, in response to the court's decision, emphasized the importance of protecting the natural environment. The authority warned that anyone caught violating conservation laws would face severe legal consequences. The agency continues to work diligently to ensure the safety and preservation of Oman’s diverse wildlife.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts by Omani authorities to combat illegal wildlife trade and protect endangered species. It serves as a reminder of the legal responsibilities of individuals to uphold environmental laws and contribute to the conservation of the country’s natural resources.
In light of the ruling, the Environment Authority has renewed its call for public cooperation in reporting any activities that threaten wildlife. The agency encourages the public to remain vigilant and supportive of efforts to maintain the ecological balance in Dhofar and across the nation.
