Muscat to Launch Metro and Water Taxi Projects by 2026

Oman’s national transport company, Mwasalat, has announced an ambitious plan to revamp Muscat’s public transportation system, with the Muscat Metro and water taxi projects set to begin by 2026. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and support sustainable urban development.
Long-Term Strategy for a Modern Transport Network
At a recent Municipal Council meeting, chaired by Sayyid Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, officials reviewed Mwasalat’s comprehensive transport strategy for 2015–2040. The company’s CEO, Badr bin Mohammed Al Nadabi, outlined five key pillars of the plan:
- Public transport legislation
- Bus transport system
- Urban transport services
- Passenger marine transport
- Railway systems
Progress and Future Developments
The first phase (2015–2018) focused on expanding bus routes, improving taxi operations, and upgrading infrastructure. The second phase (2019–2025) has been about adding new bus routes, building more stations, and improving services.
From 2026 to 2040, the third phase will introduce the Muscat Metro or a light rail system, along with water taxis to boost marine transport options.
Challenges and Urban Mobility Projects
Mwasalat is targeting 1 million daily passengers by 2040, aiming for carbon neutrality and dedicating 25% of Muscat’s main roads to public transport. However, challenges remain, including delays in the development of Muscat’s main transport hub, the absence of dedicated bus lanes, and issues with traffic signal prioritization.
