During the meeting, His Excellency Eng. Saeed bin Hamoud bin Saeed Al Mawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications & Information Technology, provided exciting news about the upcoming Muscat Metro project. The proposed metro line will connect Sultan Haitham City to the Ruwi area, marking a significant development in Oman's public transportation infrastructure.

Muscat Metro to Span 50+ km with 36 Stations

Minister Al Mawali shared that the Muscat Metro line will stretch over 50 kilometers and feature 36 stations, helping to ease transportation in Muscat. The project will be a major step forward in modernizing the city’s transportation system and supporting urban mobility. A detailed study of the Muscat Metro is set to begin this year, laying the groundwork for this ambitious initiative.

Strong Performance in Key Sectors

During the meeting, the Minister also highlighted the outstanding contribution of the logistics and ICT sectors to Oman's economy. Together, these sectors contributed more than 2 billion Omani Rials to the national GDP, accounting for 8% of the total. Investments in these fields have also been impressive, reaching 2.5 billion Omani Rials by the end of 2024. The government’s commitment to infrastructure development is evident, with nearly 1 billion Omani Rials allocated to development projects, 93% of which were directed toward improving road networks. Notably, change orders in projects have decreased by 42% since 2020, reflecting greater efficiency.

International Achievements and Recognition

Oman’s progress extends beyond national borders. In 2024, Oman made significant strides in global rankings related to transportation, communications, and ICT. The country ranked 41st globally in the e-government development index and 45th in the government's AI readiness index. Oman also placed 50th in the network readiness index and achieved the first category in the global cybersecurity index. One of the most notable achievements is Oman’s ranking as 4th in the world for aviation incident investigations, showcasing its commitment to safety and quality in the transportation sector.

Looking Ahead

With the Muscat Metro project and ongoing advancements in logistics and ICT, Oman is well on its way to becoming a regional leader in transportation innovation and infrastructure. The detailed study of the Muscat Metro and continued investment in road networks and technology will likely position Oman as a key player in modernizing regional transport. As the Sultanate builds its metro system and continues to improve its global rankings, the future of Oman’s transportation landscape looks brighter than ever.
