The primary components of the New Al Khor and Al Thakhira Sewage Treatment Works (STW) project have been completed, according to the Public Works Authority 'Ashghal.' The plant began trial operations to supply more than 200,000 people in the northern Qatari cities of Al Khor and Al Thakhira.

Eng. Khalid Saif Al Khayareen, Manager of Ashghal's Drainage Networks Projects Department, emphasized the significance of this accomplishment, stating that the project is one of the largest drainage projects serving Al Khor and Al Thakhira. The project, according to Eng. Al Khayareen, aims to provide effective and long-term solutions to preserve the environment and improve environmental conditions in these areas by constructing a new and advanced plant that uses the most advanced global wastewater treatment systems to produce treated water that meets the highest international environmental specifications and standards.

After the project was completed, the old and temporary treatment units with limited capacity were decommissioned. The flows were diverted from Al Thakhira's existing temporary treatment plant, which will be decommissioned at the end of 2020. The old treatment facility at Al Khor, which was shut in the third quarter of 2021, was also redirected.

Eng. Abdulrahman Mohammed Al-Sulaiti, Acting Head of the Treatment Plants Projects and Treated Water Networks Section, explained that the Al Khor and Al Thakhira STWs were designed and built with a capacity of 56,200 m3 per day to treat wastewater flows from the collection areas in Al Khor and Al Thakhira. The plant employs cutting-edge treatment technologies such as sequential batch reactors for biological treatment, followed by disinfection and tertiary treatment employing ultra-filtration, ultraviolet, and chlorination systems.

The cleaned water, he explained, will be used to irrigate parks and landscapes in Al Khor and Al Thakhira. It will also be utilized for irrigation and cooling at Al Bayt Stadium, one of the primary venues for the FIFA World Cup 2022.

The project involved the development of an existing pumping station in Al Khor as well as the construction of a new pumping station to transfer wastewater flows in the Al Thakhira area.

This is in addition to the construction of 114 kilometers of transmission pipelines, which would include 66 kilometers of pipelines to transport wastewater from Al Khor pumping station to the new pumping station and then to Al Khor and Al Thakhira STW, and 48 kilometers of pipelines to transport treated water from Al Khor and Al Thakhira STW to various locations in Al Khor for irrigation purposes.

The project, according to Eng. Abdulrahman Mohammed Al-Sulaiti, is designed to accommodate the expected future population growth in Al Khor and Al Thakhira cities, with the option of future expansions if needed.
