Qatar Foundation seeks to consolidate its position in the field of sustainability in all its forms and does everything in its power to achieve realistic initiatives that meet the country's long-term needs in the field of social and economic development by following the highest standards of sustainability.

The Foundation has been keen to make sustainability at the heart of all Qatar Foundation activities, especially environmental sustainability initiatives, so it works with scientists, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs in Qatar and the world to discover new innovations and develop sustainable solutions to challenges by following best practices in designing the built environment or air quality monitoring stations and others.

Among the forms of sustainability that the Foundation has been keen to establish on the university campus, where students live in student housing buildings that have a Leadership Certificate in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), these community initiatives aim to transform the Education City into a green environment that follows the best sustainability practices.

The Foundation has established the concept of sustainability in all its forms, especially environmental, and among its projects is the "Our Legacy Center", a non-profit center that focuses on policy research and advocacy with the aim of spreading awareness and influencing policies related to sustainability locally and internationally.

The Center brings together technical and research expertise, policy advice, and advocacy with the aim of forming a community of technical and research experts, government sector practitioners, policymakers, decision-makers, corporations, multilateral institutions, and civil society to build a more sustainable and regenerative future.

"Our Legacy Center" runs programs in multiple disciplines in the areas of hot climates, sustainable cities, and sustainable energy, in addition to leveraging the potential of Qatar Foundation’s Education City as a testing base for sustainable technologies and practices.

It also focuses on developing tools, solutions, and policies to improve people's lives in a natural environment, presents a message of hope, and takes effective steps to preserve heritage by working hand in hand with the community to find and design solutions that optimally utilize resources and take into account the local culture.

Among the Foundation's projects is the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute, Where Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute works to conduct and coordinate long-term research in various disciplines that meet the urgent national priorities in terms of water security, energy, and the environment, and research is conducted at the institute's world-class facilities, which include major laboratories and laboratories for micro and nanofabrication technologies.

It should be noted that one of the Foundation's plans is to establish a sustainability island inside Education City, which is the first community recycling station in Qatar.

Sustainability Island will launch six recycling pathways: paper, plastic, aluminum cans, e-waste, batteries, and organic waste. It will also be partially powered by solar panels and will be easy to use and accessible by public transport, including the Education City tram.

Sustainability Island will also feature research laboratories, an initiative-inspired gift shop, open space for exhibitions and lectures, cafés that provide organic food, and a vertical farm-to-table restaurant.
