Key Professions Affected
The ban, effective from September 1, 2024, will temporarily halt the hiring of expats in various roles, including construction workers, cleaners, loaders, bricklayers, and steel fixers. Additional professions affected include tailors (both men’s and women’s clothing), electricians (general electrical installations), waiters, painters, chefs, and barbers.
Renewal and Transfer Exceptions
Despite the ban, exceptions are in place for renewing or transferring existing work permits for expats already within the country. This clause allows flexibility for ongoing projects and existing businesses while prioritizing the employment of Omani nationals.
Implementation and Compliance
The new directive, aligned with the Labour Law and Ministerial Decision No. (180/2022), mandates all relevant authorities to ensure compliance with these regulations. The Ministry emphasizes the importance of these measures in fostering a more robust local workforce and reducing reliance on foreign labor in critical sectors.
