Oman Braces for Low Pressure System, Bringing Thunderstorms

Oman is preparing for a significant weather shift as a trough of low pressure is set to impact the country from Tuesday, December 24 to Thursday, December 26. The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre has issued an alert, advising residents to take caution as this powerful weather system brings heavy rains, gusty winds, and potential disruptions.

What to Expect

From Tuesday through Wednesday, thick clouds will form across Oman, bringing intermittent rainfall in several governorates, including Musandam, North Batinah, South Batinah, Muscat, and parts of Dakhliyah. Rainfall will range from light to moderate, with amounts between 5-15mm. Strong winds, reaching speeds of 10-20 knots, will make outdoor conditions less than ideal. Coastal areas are also expected to experience rough seas, increasing the risk of hazardous maritime conditions.

On Thursday, the weather system will continue, with heavy showers predicted in Musandam, North Batinah, South Batinah, Muscat, South Sharqiyah, parts of Dakhliyah, and the Al Hajar Mountains. Some areas could receive up to 15mm of rain, raising the risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable regions. The Al Hajar Mountains and parts of the interior are likely to see significant rainfall, which could lead to poor visibility, slippery roads, and potential landslides in mountainous areas.

Coldest Temperatures of the Winter

In addition to the stormy conditions, Oman has recorded some of the lowest temperatures this winter. Saiq was the coldest spot, with a temperature of 6.2°C. Other notable lows include 8.9°C in Yanqul and Thumrait, 9.1°C in Muqshin, and 9.5°C in Sunaynah. These cooler temperatures are expected to persist during the weather event.

Safety Precautions

The Early Warning Centre urges residents to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions. Drivers should exercise extreme caution, especially on mountainous roads where visibility may be poor and the roads could become slippery. Avoid areas prone to flooding, and be cautious around coastal regions as rough seas are anticipated. Maritime activities are also likely to be disrupted due to the stormy conditions.

This powerful weather system is expected to last for several days, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to keep residents safe. Stay alert, and take necessary actions to protect yourself and your property during this challenging weather event.
