The Sultanate of Oman, in coordination with the Arab League, has proposed key amendments to a draft resolution titled Support for the Emergency Response to the Crisis in Lebanon, which was introduced by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The amendments aim to address the urgent needs in Lebanon, focusing on the protection of critical infrastructure, diplomatic efforts to establish a ceasefire, and a request for a report on Lebanon's labour market by ILO's Director-General.

Protecting Lebanon's Critical Infrastructure and Labour Market

Oman's UN representative, H.E. Idris bin Abdulrahman al Khanjari, condemned the recent Israeli attacks on Lebanon, which have resulted in severe humanitarian consequences. With nearly 3,000 casualties, thousands injured, and over one million displaced, these attacks have devastated Lebanon’s infrastructure, including healthcare and education facilities. H.E. al Khanjari described these strikes as violations of international law, highlighting the urgent need for international action to protect Lebanon’s critical systems.

In response to the widespread damage, Oman has called for stronger efforts to safeguard vital infrastructure and ensure continued support for Lebanon’s labour market. The proposal seeks a detailed analysis from the ILO’s Director-General to assess the ongoing impact on Lebanon’s workforce and the broader socio-economic recovery.

Humanitarian Impact and Need for Reconstruction

The damage caused by the conflict has crippled essential services and left many Lebanese citizens facing extreme hardship. Lebanon’s education system, in particular, has been deeply affected, with nearly 40% of students displaced. The reconstruction of Lebanon’s infrastructure is expected to cost over $25 billion, and Oman has urged the international community to step up efforts to support the country's rebuilding.

Oman’s amendment proposal also stresses the importance of diplomatic initiatives to establish a ceasefire and end the ongoing hostilities. This call reflects Oman’s commitment to humanitarian principles and the protection of civilian lives.

International Support and Long-Term Implications

Expressing solidarity with international organizations working in Lebanon, Oman has voiced concerns over the negative impact the conflict has had on ILO’s operations in the region. The country has called for transparency regarding the progress of the ILO’s emergency response and its long-term implications for Lebanon’s recovery.

Additionally, Oman, with the backing of the Arab League, has appealed to ILO member states and donors to provide financial assistance for Lebanon's recovery efforts. This call aims to ensure that Lebanon receives the support it needs to rebuild and stabilize its economy in the wake of such widespread destruction.
