Oman has advanced four spots in the 2024 Network Readiness Index (NRI), securing 50th place globally. The index, published by the Portulans Institute and Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, evaluates how countries leverage technology to enhance global competitiveness.
Measuring Digital Transformation
The NRI assesses nations based on four key pillars: technology, people, impact, and governance. Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) highlighted the Sultanate’s strong performance in several critical sub-indicators, showcasing its advancements in digital infrastructure and inclusivity.
Key achievements include:
- 1st globally in "population covered by at least a 3G mobile network."
- 9th globally in "government promotion of investment in emerging technologies."
- 10th globally in "use of virtual social networks."
- 11th globally in "gender gap in Internet use."
These rankings underline Oman’s commitment to expanding digital access and fostering a competitive tech environment.
Oman’s Position in the GCC
Within the GCC, the UAE leads at 28th globally, followed by Saudi Arabia (35th), Qatar (38th), Bahrain (51st), and Kuwait (67th). Oman’s steady improvement reflects its focus on digital readiness in a competitive regional landscape.
Global Leaders
The United States retains its top position in the NRI for the third consecutive year, followed by Singapore in second place and Finland in third. Notable changes in the top 10 include Sweden rising to fourth, South Korea moving to fifth, and the UK climbing to eighth. The list is rounded out by the Netherlands (6th), Switzerland (7th), Germany (9th), and Denmark (10th).
