Ramadan Working Hours Announced for All Sectors in Oman

As Ramadan approaches, markets in Oman are preparing for an increase in food demand, especially for essential items like fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish. With Ramadan typically seeing a spike in shopping activity, stakeholders across the country are taking steps to ensure a steady supply of affordable food throughout the holy month.

Pre-Ramadan Preparations for a Steady Supply

To meet the expected demand, the Central Fruits and Vegetables Market (Silal) has been hard at work ensuring a steady flow of both local and imported produce. Between February 10 and 17, 2025, the market saw the delivery of 5,970 tons of imported fruits and vegetables, alongside 3,160 tons of locally grown agricultural products. This large shipment ensures that market shelves will be stocked for the Ramadan rush.

Silal has also optimized its operations by adjusting delivery hours for efficiency. Trucks bringing in wholesale goods will be received between 4 am and 2 pm, while local agricultural deliveries will be accepted in two shifts: from 4 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 11 pm, throughout the week (except Fridays). This ensures smooth processing and avoids delays during peak demand periods.

Safety and Hygiene at the Forefront

Maintaining high hygiene standards is a priority during this busy time. Silal’s team continuously monitors cleanliness and collaborates with government bodies, including the Royal Oman Police and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, to keep the market running smoothly. Over 180 product samples have already been tested to ensure food safety and quality for consumers.

Regulating Prices and Preventing Exploitation

To avoid price inflation and ensure fairness, the Directorate General of Consumer Protection Authority in Dhofar Governorate is ramping up efforts during Ramadan. This includes monitoring prices, ensuring goods are not expired, and conducting market surveys to prevent misleading promotional offers. The goal is to ensure that both small and large shopping centers offer stable prices throughout the month.

The Consumer Protection Authority is also launching campaigns to raise awareness about deceptive advertising, particularly around Ramadan promotions. These efforts are designed to protect consumers from false claims and ensure transparency in the marketplace.

Supporting Vulnerable Families with ‘Ramadan Basket’

In an effort to ease the financial burden on low-income families during Ramadan, the Consumer Protection Authority has launched the ‘Ramadan Basket’ initiative in collaboration with private entities. This program provides discounted food baskets to help families manage their expenses while ensuring they have access to the essentials for a blessed month.

Oman’s Commitment to Stable Food Supply

Along with these logistical and regulatory measures, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has reassured the public of a steady supply of live meat and fish. Since February 1, Oman has imported 169,200 heads of livestock, including cows, sheep, and goats, to maintain a consistent supply during Ramadan. Fish will also remain available in the markets, even during adverse weather conditions, to meet the demands of consumers.

Health authorities are also stepping up their efforts, with the Dhofar Municipality’s Health Control Department conducting inspection campaigns to ensure food safety, particularly in high-demand areas like meat sales, bakeries, and restaurants.
