Masjid Bab al Salam in Muscat, Oman, has made it to Time magazine’s prestigious 2024 World’s Greatest Places list. The mosque, known for its blend of traditional and modern design elements, stands out for its unique approach to architecture and spirituality.

Blend of Tradition and Innovation

Designed by the Omani firm Altqadum, Masjid Bab al Salam combines spirituality with modern design. The mosque features a minimalist style highlighted by blush-colored circular structures and a distinctive use of natural light. Time praised the mosque for its restraint compared to the more ornate religious sites in the region, providing a serene space for reflection.

A Fresh Take on Religious Architecture

Time magazine noted the mosque’s innovative design amidst the backdrop of the Middle East’s traditional and contemporary architecture. The building includes an arc of water surrounding the central structure and a slender crescent on its conical minaret. Inside, a dome with over 1,600 crystal bulbs serves as a chandelier, and a unique floor-to-ceiling window replaces the traditional mihrab, guiding worshippers.

Design Philosophy

Altqadum’s design concept for Masjid Bab al Salam aimed to merge Omani heritage with contemporary needs. The firm sought to create a space that honors historical mosque designs while meeting modern functional requirements. The project’s ambition was to craft a monument resonant with both current and future generations.

Time’s List Criteria

For its 2024 list, Time magazine sought nominations for outstanding places from its global network. The selection focused on destinations offering fresh and remarkable experiences. This year’s list includes a diverse range of places from hotels to attractions and has expanded to 100 entries, up from 50 last year.
