Oman Condemns Israeli Occupation of Syrian Territories

The Sultanate of Oman has expressed strong support for the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) advisory opinion issued on July 19, 2024. This opinion addresses the legal implications of the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, which has persisted since 1967.

A Call for Justice

Oman emphasized that the ICJ's opinion reflects the international community's dedication to justice and adherence to international law. "This opinion urges Israel to end its illegal presence in Palestine and compensate the Palestinian people for the damages resulting from its harmful policies," said a representative from Oman.

The statement, delivered by Khalid Saleh Al Rubkhi, Oman’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was made during the resumed 10 Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly. Oman views the ICJ's advisory opinion as a crucial step toward upholding the rights of the Palestinian people based on international legitimacy.

A Collective Responsibility

Oman called upon the global community to take a unified stance to implement the ICJ's advisory opinion. The Sultanate advocates for an end to Israel’s occupation and aims for a fair resolution that establishes an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem (Al Quds) as its capital.

In light of the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, exacerbated by Israel’s blockade and military operations, Oman expressed deep concern. The country urged for the immediate lifting of the siege and the facilitation of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

Rebuilding and Recovery

Oman also highlighted the importance of international efforts to rebuild Gaza and improve living conditions for Palestinians. Addressing the humanitarian crisis is vital, alongside political initiatives to achieve lasting peace in the region.

Support for Palestinian Rights

In conclusion, Oman called on all member states to support the draft resolution in the UN General Assembly. While this support is not legally binding, Oman believes it is a moral obligation to protect the rights of all peoples. The Sultanate reiterated its steadfast support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing that "justice, equality, and respect for the rule of law are the foundations for lasting peace."

Oman remains committed to advocating for the Palestinian people and their legitimate aspirations, reinforcing its role in the international dialogue surrounding this crucial issue.
