Oman’s tourism sector is undergoing a remarkable transformation as the country accelerates efforts to diversify its economy under Oman Vision 2040. With massive investments announced in 2024 and growth in both domestic and international tourism, Oman is positioning itself as a premier Middle Eastern destination.

Ambitious Investments for a Tourism Boom

In partnership with the Oman Investment Authority and Omran Group, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is leading the charge to develop the nation’s tourism infrastructure. State-owned Omran plans to invest $3 billion over the next five years in strategic tourism projects, all aligned with Oman Vision 2040’s goals of sustainability and economic growth.

Omran’s CEO, Hashil al Mahrouqi, emphasized their commitment to creating sustainable destinations that elevate Oman’s global profile. By 2034, the tourism sector aims to contribute over RO5.4 billion to the economy (9.8% of GDP) and create 265,000 jobs, ensuring that one in 13 residents will work in the sector.

$31 Billion Tourism Plan By 2040

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has unveiled a $31 billion investment plan to enhance Oman’s appeal to leisure and business travelers. This initiative was spotlighted at the ITB Berlin Convention 2024, where Undersecretary H E Azzan al Busaidi highlighted Oman’s unique offerings and the importance of attracting foreign investments to fuel growth.

Record-Breaking Growth in Visitors

Tourism in Oman is experiencing historic growth. In 2023, the country welcomed 4 million visitors, a dramatic increase compared to previous years. European markets are particularly promising, with German tourist arrivals jumping 182%.

Economic impact studies by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) predict continued momentum. In 2023, the sector contributed RO2.8 billion to GDP, up 35% from 2022. By 2024, this is expected to rise to RO3.3 billion, representing 7.6% of the economy. Domestic tourism has also seen a resurgence, with spending expected to climb to RO1.5 billion in 2024.

Sustainability Takes Center Stage

Oman’s tourism strategy prioritizes sustainability. Projects like the Nasim Resort at Jabal Akhdar cater to high-end tourists while ensuring minimal environmental impact. Omran is championing initiatives like ‘Visit Oman,’ a platform connecting local tourism experiences with global markets, further enhancing Oman’s reputation as a sustainable and innovative destination.

Infrastructure and Accessibility

To meet growing demand, Oman is investing $5.9 billion in 360 tourism projects. These include luxury hotels, resorts, and improved transport links. Additionally, visa reforms have simplified travel for visitors from over 100 countries, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

A Promising Future

With over 2 million visitors arriving in the first half of 2024, a 5.2% increase year-on-year, Oman’s tourism sector shows no signs of slowing. Hotel revenues rose 8.6% to RO119.5 million during the same period, underscoring the growing demand for high-quality accommodations.

As Oman positions itself as a top-tier destination, its focus on sustainability, innovation, and accessibility ensures a bright and thriving future for its tourism sector.
