The National Center for Statistics has revealed that the total number of registered marriages dropped from 19,294 in 2021 to 15,400 in 2022, a 20 percent decrease in marriages in Oman.

Between the years 2017 and 2021, there was a total of 39,400 marriages registered in the Sultanate.

Out of the 15,400 marriages registered in 2022, 14,127 marriages were registered between Omani citizens, while 613 marriages were registered between Omani citizens and foreigners.

In the same year, there were 4,160 divorce cases registered. Among these cases, 3,682 cases were registered by Omani citizens, while 208 divorces occurred between Omani citizens and foreigners.

An important factor that has led to the decline in marriages in Oman is the changing societal and cultural norms.

The younger generations in the country are prioritizing their education and careers over early marriages, which seems to have led to this decline in marriages.

Younger people's decisions to marry are also affected by economic factors such as rising living costs and unemployment rates.
