n October 2024, the Ministry of Labour (MoL) in Oman arrested 658 expatriates in the North Al Batinah Governorate for labor law violations. This effort, led by the Labour Directorate in North Al Batinah, was carried out by the Joint Inspection Team, with additional support from the Inspection Unit of the Security and Safety Services.

These inspections were aimed at cracking down on unlawful employment practices and maintaining regulatory compliance in the workforce. Here’s a breakdown of the violations:

  • 425 expatriates: Detained for either leaving their jobs or staying in the country with expired residency permits.
  • 68 expatriates: Found working for employers other than those who had initially hired them, which breaches employment contracts.
  • 106 expatriates: Employed in positions designated for Omani nationals, despite not having the necessary permits.
  • 59 expatriates: Found to be working for themselves without proper authorization.

In addition to these arrests, 49 other labor violations were referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal action.

This crackdown highlights Oman’s ongoing commitment to enforcing labor regulations and supporting lawful employment practices. By addressing these violations, the Ministry of Labour aims to create a stable and compliant workforce across the Sultanate.
