There are 46 cities in Saudi Arabia, however, 5 of them are considered major cities, and they are:
Riyadh
Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and the most obvious and accessible to foreign visitors. Riyadh is the largest city in Saudi Arabia; it extends for some 600 square miles (1600 square kilometers) and has a population of more than 7 million. Riyadh's name means garden, and it's derived from the Arabic word rawdha.
Jeddah
Jeddah is located on the coast of the Red Sea and is the major urban center of western Saudi Arabia, it’s the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest seaport on the Red Sea, and the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh, with a population of that, exceed 3.4 million. Jeddah is an important commercial hub in Saudi Arabia, and it’s a gateway to Mecca and Madina.
The Holy City of Makkah
Makkah is the holiest city on earth for Muslims, and it is the place where the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was born, and he received God’s message in it. Millions of Muslims visit Mecca every year in Dhu'al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, for Hajj pilgrimage. Makkah lies inland 73 kilometers east of Jeddah, located in Sirat Mountains above sea level, and the area around the mosque comprises the old city. Entry to Makkah is restricted to Muslims only as it is a holy place.
The Holy City of Madinah
Madinah is the second holiest city in Islam, it is located in the Hejaz region of Western Saudi Arabia, about 340km north of Makkah, and like Makkah, entry to Al Madinah is restricted to Muslims only as it is a holy place. The Holy City of Madinah houses 3 three significant mosques in Islam, Masjid AlNabawi, Masjid Quba, and Masjid AlQiblatain, and there are many attractions in and around the city for visitors.
Eastern Province
There are three main cities in the Eastern Province, Al-Khobar, Dammam, and Dhahran, and it is the third most populous province in Saudi Arabia, after Makkah and Riyadh. Eastern Province enjoys a high economic position, encompasses the entire east coast of Saudi Arabia, and acts as a major platform for most of the kingdom's oil production and exports.
