Thirty People Dead in the 2025 Maha Kumb Mela in India

Thirty individuals are dead and at least 60 individuals are injured in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in northern India, according to the Uttar Pradesh Police.
The Kumbh Mela is where many pilgrims gather for bathing on the auspicious day of the six-week Hindu festival.
The pilgrims arrived on Wednesday morning at the temporary township in Prayagraj, which is at the confluence of three rivers Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical and invisible Saraswati.
Videos and photographs have gone viral on social media, showing bodies being taken away on stretchers, while people were sitting on the ground crying after the incident.
As people were trying to escape, various clothes, shoes, backpacks, and blankets were discarded at the location.
According to Vijay Kiran Anand, Chief Officer of the Mahakumbh Mela, and Vaibhav Krishna, DIG of the Mahakumbh Mela, the stampede was triggered when the barricades for crowd control broke, causing pilgrims to fall over each other, leading to chaos.
Out of the 30 victims, 25 have been identified and they were individuals from Karnataka, Assam, and Gujarat.
A total of 90 individuals were taken to the hospital with 36 individuals receiving treatment in the local hospital.
