This Percentage of Omanis Struggles with Asthma
Asthma is a growing concern in Oman, affecting 7.3% of adults and 12.7% of children, according to recent health statistics. The disease is part of a broader category of respiratory issues, which also include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, and pneumonia. These conditions often result from factors like infections, tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, and pollution.
Global and Local Impact of Asthma
Asthma is one of the leading chronic respiratory diseases worldwide. The World Health Organization reported that 262 million people were affected by asthma in 2019, contributing to nearly half a million deaths each year. In Oman, the disease significantly impacts the population, with 12.7% of children and 7.3% of adults affected.
Efforts to Manage and Prevent Asthma
The Omani Ministry of Health (MoH) has taken steps to combat the rising asthma rates. The government has set up 261 specialized asthma clinics across the country to offer better care and reduce emergency visits. These clinics are dedicated to providing comprehensive services and training healthcare professionals on asthma management and proper inhaler usage.
Additionally, the MoH has been running public awareness campaigns to educate the public on the severity of asthma and how to manage it effectively, aiming to reduce hospital visits and improve quality of life for those affected.
Economic Impact of Asthma
A 2013 study revealed the financial burden of asthma, showing that inpatient visits accounted for the largest share of treatment costs, at 55%. Emergency and outpatient visits followed, contributing 25% and 20% of the costs, respectively. Medication costs were relatively low, accounting for less than 0.2% of total direct costs.
