Omani Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), in cooperation with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), announced that launch of trials for an early warning broadcast service (EWS) on weather conditions via mobile phones this week.

In a statement, TRA said, ‘The trial will begin in South Batinah on May 3rd, followed by South Sharqiyah and Al Wusta on May 15th, Muscat on May 16th, Dhofar on May 17th, North Batinah on June 13th, South Batinah on June 14th, and Musandam on June 15th.’

Omantel and Ooredoo subscribers will receive the emergency messages.

‘An emergency can occur at any time, therefore you should be attentive to any weather alert on your phone to protect yourself and your family in a time of crisis,’ CAA stated.

The CAA added that these emergency messages are automatic and supported by all generations of devices, including 5G.
