A UK woman gave her uterus to her younger sister, who became the first person in the country to receive a womb transplant.

The transplant was a success, and the 34-year-old recipient is now planning to have two children through in vitro fertilization (IVF), according to media reports.

The married woman, who successfully received a womb transplant from her 40-year-old sister, was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH), a rare condition that leads to underdeveloped or absent womb, The Guardian reported that MRKH, affecting around 1 in 5,000 women, caused her initial womb underdevelopment.

Women with MRKH syndrome still have ovaries that can produce eggs and female hormones. This means that they can conceive through fertility treatment, according to the report.
