Oman's Ministry of Tourism and Heritage is renovating the UNESCO World Heritage site Qalhat and so far the city's outer fence, the mosque, and reservoirs have been renovated.
New pathways are being developed for tourists, which is part of the Ministry's plan to boost tourism in the city.
Qalhat has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2018. Qalhat is located on the east coast of Oman and the city was a major port on the east coast of Arabia between the 11th and 15th centuries CE. Qalhat was the second capital city of the Kingdom of Hormuz, but it was abandoned in the 16th century following attacks from the Portuguese.
The structure that remained intact at the archaeological site was the mausoleum of Bibi Maryam (c.1280–1315).
The city was mentioned by Marco Polo in his Book 'The Description of the World' and visited by Ibn Battutah, two of history's greatest explorers.
