To encourage the public to switch over from petrol to electric vehicles, and as support of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to make Dubai the smartest and happiest, “DEWA” the electricity provider for Dubai, took the lead in setting up electric vehicle charging stations in various locations in Dubai. Where are the electric car charging stations in Dubai? How much does it cost to charge an electronic vehicle in Dubai? Let us find out. 

EV Green Charger initiative  

"The Electric Vehicle (EV) Green Charger" initiative was launched by DEWA in 2015 to support the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest and happiest city in the world. The aim was to encourage the public to switch over from petrol to electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and support Sustainable transportation in Dubai.  

To utilize the charging station network, you must have a Green Charger card, and you can get it by registering with DEWA by creating DEWA EV account, which is available on DEWA website and DEWA Smart Application. 

Free charging for non-commercial electric vehicles 

DEWA offers free charging for non-commercial EV customers registered in the EV Green Charger Initiative until December 31, 2021. This incentive is exclusively available at public charging stations and not home charging stations. In addition, electric cars owners in Dubai get free parking until 2022

How to create a DEWA EV account 

To use DEWA electric vehicle charging stations, you must own the Electrical Vehicle Green Charger card by registering and creating an EV Account for your electric car through DEWA website and DEWA Smart Application. After you complete the registration process, the Electrical Vehicle Green Charger card will be automatically issued and delivered to you through a courier company at your registered address within three working days. The card will hold the same name written in the registered Emirates ID/Trade license/Passport.

  • Individual (non-commercial): Free up to 31 Dec 2021 

  • Business (Commercial): AED 500/- 

  • Government: Exempted from Security Deposit 

 Green Charger Card Delivery Charges 

  • Individual (non-commercial): Free card delivery up to 31 December 2021 

  • Business (Commercial): AED 20/- 

  • Government: AED 20/-

How much does it cost to charge electric vehicles in Dubai? 

Fees for Registered EV Accounts Users 

  • Individual (non-commercial): Free up to 31 December 2021. 

  • Business (Commercial): AED29 Fils per KW   

  • Government: AED29 Fils per KW

EV Green Charger Guest Mode Users can start charging instantly without registration through scanning QR Code placed on the Green Charger Stations, Then select from below charging packages and pay for the EV one-time use package.

    • 30 Minutes: 3.35 AED

    • 60 Minutes: 6.7 AED

    • 90 Minutes: 10.05 AED

    • 120 Minutes: 13.4 AED 

  • FASTCHARGER50-AC (43KW):

    • 30 Minutes: 6.55 AED

    • 60 Minutes: 13.09 AED 

  • FASTCHARGER50-DC:

    • 30 Minutes: 7.61 AED 

    • 60 Minutes: 15.23 AED 

  • FASTCHARGER150-DC:

    • 30 Minutes: 22.84 AED

    • 60 Minutes: 45.68 AED

Types of Charging Stations 

There are four types of DEWA: 

  • Wall Box Charger: 22 kW AC, with single Type 2 Socket
  • Public Charger: 2 x 22 kW AC, with double Type 2 Socket
  • Fast Charger: 43 kW AC with Type 2 Socket, 50 kW DC ChadeMO and Combo CCS Sockets
  • Ultra-Fast Charger: 150 kW DC with ChadeMO and combo CCS sockets
