Why is Zamzam Water Special for Muslims?
Zamzam water holds a special place in the Muslim faith and holds great significance for Muslims worldwide as it is considered blessed and holy water. Zamzam water comes from only one source, which is its namesake, Zamzam well in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Muslims believe Zamzam is the purest water in existence. Muslim pilgrims performing the Hajj or Umrah often get Zamzam water as a gift for their loved ones after visiting Makkah.
Here are some facts and information about the origins and significance of Zamam water:
What is Zamzam Water?
In Islam, Zamzam water is regarded as blessed holy water that originates from a 35-meter-deep well situated only 20 meters from the Ka'aba in Makkah, the place considered by Muslims to be the holiest place on earth. The origins of the name Zamzam are unclear, however, it is believed the name is onomatopoeic, which means it phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes.
What is the History of the Zamzam Water?
In the Islamic faith, the creation of Zamzam well is considered one of Allah's miracles that occurred to save Hajar, the first wife of Prophet Ibraham, and her son, Prophet Ismail, from thirst. In Islamic narratives, Ibrahim, commanded by God, left Hajar and Ismail in the current location of the Ka'aba in present-day Makkah. After running out of food and water, Hajar ran back and forth between the two hills of Safa and Marwah in search of water to quench Ismail's thirst until suddenly the earth cracked and water came bursting out of the ground right next to where she left her son.
What are the benefits of Zamzam Water?
There are no moss, insects, fungi, or other contaminants in the well's always-clean water. It has more naturally occurring minerals than regular desalinated water which results in the unique and strong flavor of the water. Zamzam water functions as a natural booster for cells and metabolism and is an excellent source of calcium for bones and teeth. According to Islamic scriptures, Zamzam water includes all the nutrients and components that a person needs for their body to operate at its best, hence assisting in the control of hunger and fatigue.
As stated by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), "the water from the well is said to be a natural source of healing for the sick", thus pilgrims are constantly eager to drink from it and bring bottles filled with the water back to their home countries after performing Umrah or Hajj.
