HM Issues Decree Amending Sanctuary Name to Arabian Oryx Reserve

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has issued a royal decree amending the name of the wildlife reserve in the Governorate of Al Wusta to "Arabian Oryx Reserve."

The sanctuary was previously referred to as the "Living and Fungal Organisms Reserve."

The decree will come into force from the day following its date of publishing in the official gazette.

The aim of establishing the Arabian Oryx Reserve is to preserve the natural diversity and rare wildlife and to highlight the values of the geological and land formations in the region.

The reserve was established in 1994. Currently, the area of the reserve exceeds 28,000 square kilometers.

Al Wusta Governorate was chosen to become the seat of the project for the resettlement of the Arabian Oryx, as it is the place where the oryx were seen grazing for the last time in the late 60s of the last century.
