Kuwait & Oman Enjoy Extended Break for Israa Wal Miraj

To celebrate Israa Wal Miraj, Kuwait and Oman have both declared January 30 as a holiday across all ministries, government agencies, and public institutions. This decision will give residents in both countries a long weekend, extending from Thursday, January 30, to Saturday, February 1, 2025.

While Israa Wal Miraj falls on January 27 this year, both nations chose to observe the holiday on Thursday, creating a three-day break. This decision applies to both public and private sector employees in Oman, which has also made the day a paid holiday.

UAE Does Not Observe Israa Wal Miraj

In contrast, the UAE has moved away from officially recognizing Israa Wal Miraj as a holiday. Although it was once part of the country’s public holiday list, the government removed it in 2019, following a decision to unify holidays for both the public and private sectors. As a result, residents of the UAE will continue their regular work schedule on January 30.

Israa Wal Miraj is an important occasion in Islamic tradition. It commemorates the night when Prophet Muhammad is believed to have made a miraculous journey from Masjid Al Haram in Makkah to Masjid Al Aqsa in Jerusalem, and then ascended to the heavens. This event is celebrated on the 27th night of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This year, it falls on January 27.

While Kuwait and Oman will enjoy a break, the observance of Israa Wal Miraj continues to vary across the region.
