Multiple Areas in Oman Under Heavy Rainfall Warning

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a heavy rainfall alert (Alert 1) for various regions in Oman, effective from Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 4 AM until Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 4 AM. This warning comes as the country braces for heavy thunderstorms expected to start developing on Monday evening and continue through Wednesday, all due to a tropical system making its presence felt.

Affected Areas

The alert covers several governorates, including:

  • South Al Sharqiyah
  • Al Wusta
  • Dhofar

Additionally, parts of Muscat, North Al Sharqiyah, Al Dakhiliyah, South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, and Al Buraimi will also be impacted. Rainfall amounts are expected to range between 30-80 mm, with risks of strong downdrafts, hail, and flash floods in wadis (valleys).

Multiple Areas in Oman Under Heavy Rainfall Warning

What to Expect

Here’s a quick rundown of the key points from the CAA alert:

  • Heavy Thunderstorms: Expect thunderstorms with 30-80 mm of rainfall, which could lead to flash floods.
  • Strong Winds: Downdrafts are likely to create strong winds, ranging from 28-64 km/h (15-35 knots).
  • Sea Conditions: The Oman Sea coast may see rising waves between 1.5 and 3 meters, making conditions dangerous for sailing.
  • Visibility Issues: Thunderstorms may significantly reduce visibility, so it's best to exercise caution when driving.

Safety Precautions

The CAA advises all residents to take the following safety measures during the alert period:

  • Avoid Wadis: Stay clear of wadis, especially during heavy rains, to prevent being caught in flash floods.
  • Steer Clear of Low-Lying Areas: These areas are at higher risk for flooding.
  • Refrain from Sailing: Given the worsening sea conditions, it's best to avoid any sailing activities.

The CAA will provide updates every 24 hours as necessary. Citizens are urged to stay informed and to follow the safety precautions outlined in the alert.
