Oman Aims to Attract 6 Million Tourists Annually by 2030

Oman is on a mission to attract 6 million tourists per year by 2030, and it plans to reach this target ahead of schedule. This was revealed by H.E. Salim al Mahrouqi, the Minister of Heritage and Tourism, during the international media forum “Oman and the World” in Muscat. The forum, held on Wednesday, brought together officials from Oman and media representatives from various countries, including India, China, Japan, Turkey, and the UK.

The event celebrated Oman’s achievements in tourism and economic growth, aligning with the country’s Accession Day celebrations. The tourism sector's recovery post-COVID-19 was a key focus of the discussions.

Tourism Growth and Challenges

Oman’s tourism sector is rebounding strongly, with over 4 million tourists visiting in 2023 alone. H.E. Mahrouqi highlighted the country’s unique appeal, from its pristine beaches and ports to its diverse landscapes and adventure tourism opportunities. To continue this growth, Oman is focusing on promoting adventure tourism, marine activities, culinary experiences, and UNESCO-listed archaeological sites.

However, one significant challenge remains: limited direct flight connectivity. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is actively addressing this issue to make Oman more accessible to international visitors.

Improving Connectivity and Visa Policies

To attract more tourists, Oman has waived visa requirements for citizens of 103 countries and is expanding its port facilities to accommodate a growing number of visitors. The Dhofar region is expected to receive around 500 charter flights this year, further boosting accessibility.

Oman is also participating in discussions for a unified Gulf tourism visa, which would streamline travel across the region, making it easier for tourists to visit multiple Gulf countries in one trip.

Focuson Eco-Tourism and Regional Collaboration

In addition to improving infrastructure, Oman is positioning itself as a top eco-tourism destination. The opening of the Oman Botanic Garden this year is expected to enhance the country’s reputation among nature enthusiasts. The garden, one of the largest in the region, reflects Oman’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

Collaborating with neighboring Gulf countries, Oman is also engaging in joint campaigns to promote the region as a cohesive and attractive tourism destination.
