Oman Boosts Connectivity With 42 Road Projects in 2024

Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) is making big strides in 2024, awarding tenders for 42 road projects aimed at improving connectivity and enhancing infrastructure across the country.

Key Highlights of Road Developments

Among the standout projects are the final three phases of the Adam-Thumrait Road dualisation project, a massive undertaking spanning 400km. These phases will introduce essential infrastructure like rest areas, police and emergency parking, service roads, box culverts, and drainage systems:

  • Phase 3 (132.5km, Haima to Maqshin): RO70.03mn
  • Phase 4 (135km, Maqshin to Dawkah): RO118.38mn
  • Phase 5 (132.7km, Dawkah to Thumrait): RO69.79mn

Another noteworthy initiative is the construction of a road in Jebel Shams, a popular tourist destination. This project will improve access and strengthen Oman’s strategic road network, making it easier for visitors to explore the region’s stunning landscapes.

Progress Across the Sultanate

Oman’s road infrastructure development extends beyond the Adam-Thumrait and Jebel Shams projects:

  • Sharqiyah Expressway (Part Two – Phase Two): Currently 15% complete as of October 2024.
  • Batinah Coastal Road Project – Phase 1: Construction has commenced, with steady progress expected.
  • Khasab-Lima-Dibba Road (Musandam): 26% complete, promising enhanced accessibility in the governorate.

Additionally, the newly opened 27km Rusayl-Bidbid Road has already bolstered connectivity. MTCIT is also designing and implementing the Liwa Road dual carriageway and creating road links connecting four villages in the Wilayat of Shinas to the Batinah Expressway.

Comprehensive Infrastructure Focus

In addition to new projects, MTCIT is repairing 80 road sites damaged by weather and wadi crossings. The ministry is also pushing forward with smart transport technologies and regulatory reforms, boosting permits, inspections, and overall transport activity.

Driving Oman’s Sustainable Growth

“These projects are designed to modernise Oman’s road network, stimulate tourism, boost commerce, and improve traffic safety,” stated an MTCIT official.

By investing in these large-scale developments, Oman is not only enhancing mobility and accessibility but also paving the way for economic growth and social progress. With a forward-thinking approach, the sultanate is ensuring long-term benefits for its residents and visitors alike.

Oman’s road network improvements reaffirm its commitment to sustainable development, better connectivity, and a modern transport system that serves as a cornerstone for its future.
