Oman Falls Short as UAE Secures Top Spot in Gulf Cup T20

Defending champions Oman stumbled in their Gulf Cup T20 campaign, succumbing to a 24-run defeat against hosts UAE at Dubai's ICC Academy Ground on Sunday.

The loss leaves Oman playing catch-up as UAE cements its position atop the points table with a perfect start.

Chasing a target of 158, Oman’s innings got off to a shaky start. Despite a promising knock of 26 by skipper Jatinder Singh, wickets tumbled at regular intervals. Key batter Aamir Kaleem contributed 23 before falling to Dhruv Parashar’s sharp fielding. With the scoreboard reading 64/2 by the 10th over, Oman struggled to maintain momentum.

Middle-order batters Karan Sonavale and Hammad Mirza couldn’t hold the innings together, adding only 14 and 11 runs, respectively. The UAE bowlers turned up the heat, with Junaid Siddique (2/24), Ali Naseer (2/23), and Muhammad Jawadullah (2/25) delivering match-winning spells. Despite a spirited 22* from Mohammed Nadeem, Oman fell short at 133/8 in their 20 overs.

Earlier, UAE set the tone with a solid 157/7, thanks to skipper Muhammad Waseem’s explosive 48 and Tanish Suri’s steady 40. The duo shared a 79-run partnership that laid a strong foundation. Oman’s Samay Shrivastav (3/29) and Sufyan Mehmood (2/35) kept UAE in check, but late cameos from Alishan Sharafu (22) and Dhruv Parashar (17*) pushed the total to a challenging figure.

Waseem’s stellar performance earned him the Player of the Match award, underscoring UAE’s dominance as they gear up for the next match with momentum firmly on their side.

Brief Scores:
UAE 157/7 (Muhammad Waseem 48, Tanish Suri 40; Samay Shrivastav 3/29)
Oman 133/8 (Jatinder Singh 26, Mohammed Nadeem 22*; Ali Naseer 2/23, Muhammad Jawadullah 2/25)
