The Ministry of Education (MoE) is taking steps to incorporate Chinese as a new foreign language in schools. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify language education.

Changes to Previous Language Programs

H.E. Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniya, the Minister of Education, has issued Ministerial Decision No. 192/2024, revoking two earlier decisions about the special committee for French and German language trials. This move is aimed at streamlining the process for the introduction of new languages.

The ministry’s plan to add Chinese is a reflection of its dedication to expanding language offerings. This addition is a strategic move to prepare students for a globalized world, where the ability to communicate in multiple languages is increasingly valuable.

New Foreign Languages Section

To facilitate these changes, the MoE has created a Foreign Languages Curricula Section within the Humanities Curriculum Development Department. This new section will take over the roles previously managed by the now-dissolved committee, ensuring a smooth transition.

French and German Remain Available

Despite these updates, the MoE has confirmed that French and German will continue to be available as elective subjects for students in Grades 11 and 12. This ensures that students still have a variety of language options to choose from.
