Oman Sees 300% Surge in Electric Vehicles in 2024

Oman has recorded an impressive 300% increase in the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in 2024, jumping from 550 in 2023 to 1,500, according to Eng. Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shamakhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology for Transport.

This sharp rise underscores Oman’s commitment to green mobility and reducing its carbon footprint as part of its long-term sustainability goals.

Al Shamakhi emphasized that sustainable transport is a key focus in Oman’s Vision 2050, which aims to lower carbon emissions through greener mobility solutions. The government has taken significant steps, including the installation of over 120 EV charging stations across the country in 2023, with plans to reach more than 200 by the end of this year and 350 by 2027.

Oman's investment in green mobility extends beyond just electric vehicles. The Ministry is actively collaborating with the private sector to enhance EV infrastructure across its governorates. In addition to charging stations, plans include converting port equipment to electric power and transforming airports to eco-friendly operations. Initiatives such as sustainable fuel production for aircraft and emissions reduction at data centers and communication towers are also underway.
