Qatar Will Continue to Improve International Migration Cooperation

Qatar has stated its intention to continue its contributions to improve international migration cooperation, as well as its eagerness to continue its role as an important and effective partner in international efforts to ensure the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration's vision and objectives, based on its national principles of human rights respect, promotion, and protection.

This was stated by HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, before the first International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), which was conducted under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, according to the statement, provides a beneficial cooperative framework and a detailed vision for establishing a safe worldwide environment for migration regulation.

Qatar has reviewed the initiatives it has taken in support of the Global Compact's goals, highlighting its effort to form a national working group led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comprised of representatives from government agencies responsible for migration policies and other stakeholders in the country, to implement the agreement's commitments and principles.

Qatar has also recognized the important role played by expatriate employees in developing economic growth and attaining long-term prosperity.

Qatar is aiming to provide basic services to migrant workers without intolerance, according to the statement, because they are entitled to legal protection and assistance in areas like health, education, social care, and housing.

Qatar is continuing its public awareness campaigns to introduce national legislation and recent labor reforms, in collaboration with all interested parties, to complement its tireless efforts to develop labor laws and to continue engaging with this issue in a clear manner that reflects its commitment to international labor standards, where legislative and executive measures have been taken to ensure the protection and promulgation of labor laws.

Qatar has begun an ambitious effort to establish a competitive and diverse economy, with important aims in the areas of fair recruiting and fair and equal employment in accordance with international labor norms.

The statement mentioned Qatar's pioneering efforts in the region, such as the final abolition of the sponsorship system and the implementation of radical labor law reforms in compliance with an ambitious plan aimed at building a modern and competitive labor market that makes sure decent working conditions for all and a safe and healthy work environment.

Within the framework of its commitment to the Global Agreement on Migration, Qatar emphasized its desire to ensure safe and humane means of mobility for migrant workers, as well as to safeguard them from human trafficking and exploitation.

It praised Qatar's innovative initiatives, citing the establishment of Qatar visa centers in labor-sending countries to complete procedures and understand employment terms, which contributes to improving transparency and providing workers with the necessary protection.

Qatar will continue to make all efforts necessary to protect workers, according to the statement.

According to the Qatar National Vision 2030, Qatar aims to develop a more efficient and productive labor market by encouraging investments and providing job options for people with the necessary skills.

During the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the required precautions were made in coordination with the competent authorities to allow all workers to continue moving money to their relatives in their nations through simple means.

The statement also expressed Qatar's pride in hosting the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries in Doha from March 5 to 9, 2023, noting that the Doha Work Programme for Least Developed Countries did not overlook the useful influences of migrants to complex construct growth and the obligation to make deals at the international level to ensure safe, orderly, and reliable migration in a manner that includes complete respect and humane treatment.
