The Nobel Peace Prize 2024 Awarded to Nihon Hidankyo

The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese grassroots organization Nihon Hidankyo, which represents thousands of survivors of the 1945 Hiroshima attack when the US dropped nuclear bombs on Japan.

The organization was given the award "for efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons”. The organization includes A-bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki who are known as the Hibakusha.

The co-head of Nihon Hidankyo, Toshiyuki Mimaki, said after receiving the honour that the situation of the children in Gaza is similar to the situation in Japan at the end of World War II.

After the organization received the award, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said, "The fact that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to this organisation, which has spent many years working toward the abolition of nuclear weapons, is extremely meaningful."

The mayor of Hiroshima, Kazumi Matsui, said, "Hibakusha are fast ageing, and there are fewer and fewer people able to testify to the meaninglessness of possessing atomic bombs and their absolute evil."

Nihon Hindankyo has member organizations in all 47 Japanese prefectures, representing all Hibakusha. The organization works with other organizations to protect the rights of these people.
