Oman Refuses Normalization with Israel

In a recent interview with Russia's Sputnik news agency, H E Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali al Harthy, Undersecretary for Political Affairs in Oman’s Foreign Ministry, made a strong call for an immediate halt to what he described as the "barbaric war on Gaza." At the same time, he confirmed that Oman has no plans to normalize relations with Israel.

H E Harthy criticized the recent wave of normalization deals between Israel and several regional countries, stating that these agreements have done little to improve the rights of Palestinians. Instead, they have enabled further abuses and delays in addressing the core issues of the conflict. “The important issue now is not whether or not we normalize, but rather reaching a solution to the Palestinian issue and giving the Palestinians their rights,” he stressed.

Oman’s Stance on Palestinian Rights and Regional Diplomacy

H E Harthy emphasized that Muscat is working closely with the international community and key regional players to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. However, he clarified that Oman is not directly communicating with Tel Aviv or mediating between Israel and Iran.

He also pointed to Oman’s deep commitment to Palestinian solidarity, citing His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik’s strong support for ending attacks on civilians in Gaza. H E Harthy urged the global community to uphold its responsibility by supporting the Palestinians' right to an independent state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Commitment to Arab Unity and Regional Stability

Oman continues to advocate for Arab unity through strengthening the Arab League and other regional organizations that promote joint Arab action. H E Harthy highlighted the Middle East’s strategic importance to international security, while acknowledging the region’s historical challenges.

Despite the provocations from Israel, H E Harthy expressed confidence that a major regional war is unlikely, crediting the prudence and rationality of countries in the region. “Oman is working with global partners to prevent conflict,” he said, urging an immediate ceasefire and attributing much of the ongoing tensions to Israeli actions in Palestine.

Criticism of the UN and Call for Reform

H E Harthy also voiced concerns about the inadequacy of current United Nations mechanisms in resolving the Palestinian issue. He suggested that the UN’s response has been ineffective, especially when compared to the international community’s handling of the Ukrainian crisis. “The majority of countries in the world, particularly Third World nations including Oman, are calling for a radical reform of the UN mechanisms,” he added.

The Role of Russia, China, and Global Peace Efforts

Turning to the roles of Russia and China, H E Harthy described them as “pivotal global players” and permanent members of the UN Security Council, with significant responsibilities for maintaining international peace and security. He emphasized the need for cooperation among the world’s major powers, particularly the Security Council’s permanent members, to address global challenges.

“Oman consistently advocates for global consensus in tackling contemporary issues, including political, environmental, climate, and energy concerns,” he said. He also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sustainable development and peaceful international relations.

Impact of Saudi-Iran Diplomatic Relations

H E Harthy welcomed the recent resumption of diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, highlighting that their reconciliation has contributed to greater regional stability. “As two major regional powers, their mutual understanding is crucial for maintaining peace,” he noted.

Oman remains steadfast in its support for Palestinian rights and continues to reject normalization with Israel. The country is focused on de-escalating conflicts in the region and fostering cooperation among global powers to achieve lasting peace and security, while pushing for critical reforms in international mechanisms like the UN.
