Oman Hosts Art Exhibition Celebrating Palestinian Heritage

Muscat is currently hosting a special exhibition titled “Hanthala of Palestine, Naji Al-Ali’s Line and Thread”, celebrating the influential work of the late Palestinian cartoonist Naji Al-Ali and the intricate embroidery of Palestinian artist Safaa Surour. The exhibition, which runs until January 6, 2025, highlights the powerful symbolism of Al-Ali’s art and the cultural heritage of Palestine through Surour’s traditional embroidery

The Legacy of Naji Al-Ali

Naji Al-Ali is known for his bold political cartoons, with his iconic character Hanthala becoming a symbol of Palestinian resistance. The character, a barefoot child with his back turned to the world, represents silent protest and hope amidst hardship. First drawn in 1969, Hanthala has come to embody the Palestinian struggle and remains a symbol of resilience in the face of oppression.

Al-Ali’s cartoons, which total around 40,000 works, have left a lasting impact on global awareness of the Palestinian cause. His art continues to inspire and provoke, highlighting the suffering and resistance of the Palestinian people.

Palestinian Embroidery by Safaa Surour

The exhibition also features the work of Safaa Surour, whose detailed embroidery reflects the rich cultural heritage of Palestinian women.
